Krioneri (Greek: Κρυονέρι meaning "cold water") is a settlement located east-southeast of Messolongi. Its population in 2001 was 110. It is located by the banks of the Evinos river and is a popular summer destination. Krioneri with its picturesque harbor is located 3 km east of Galata village. It is a beautiful coastal village with 90 inhabitants and belongs to municipality of Nafpaktos. Considered as the Galata’s port located in the southern part of the Etoloakarnania county, almost opposite of Patras, on the shore of the Kalydona bay and foothills of Varasova mountain. The beauty of these towering rocks is impressive and they are perfect for climbing. If you continue east, you can enjoy the cold and crystal clear waters of the Glypha source and if you pass the stone bridge, you will find yourself beneath the cliffs of Varasova and climbing routes. In the small port of Krioneri moor boats and yachts. During the summer months when they are not blowing strong, easterly winds Krioneri is ideal for water sports (scuba diving, spearfishing, water skiing, wind surf, kite surf,Jet ski, etc.). The beautiful, beach of Kryoneri is 2 km long and you may swim, walk or run until the beautiful beach of Kavourotrypa. It is very safe for small children because of crystal and shallow waters. In Kryoneri there are several hotels and resorts with all the amenities for enchanting stay. In the area there are also greek taverns - restaurants, beach bars, nightclubs and cafes. Some taverns work during the entire year. Here you will not find super market. The closest market and super market is in Galatas village (3,5 km). Varasova mountain

Mountain of Varasova has a long history. It is believed to get its name from King Vara, who lived in the area during the ancient times. Other versions say that the name is Slavic and means "place of copper", or "the place of strong air hits." The Barasova is a 3 equal top solid rock . The highest peak is 914 meters called Hammer and denoted by a column (trigonometric point-Trigonometrical point) of the Military Geographic Service. In some caves of Varasova mountain there are stalactites and stalagmites. The Greek state declared Varasova mountain as a place of history and οutstanding natural beauty. During the Byzantine period and the Turkish occupation many churches, monasteries and monks hermitages (around 72) were built inside the mountain of Varasova. Therefore, is called the "Holy Mountain of Rumeli", "Athos of Western Greece", and "Sanctuary mountain". At a height of about 835 meters and surrounded by a landscape of oaks on the east side of the mountain there is a water well. South and southwest of the mountain the slopes end up abruptly to the Kryoneri village, forming steep cliffs with wild, exhilarating beauty. The west side of Varasova mountain the height, slope and the physical terrain is suitable for paragliding. The mountain of Varassova is regarded as one of the best climbing mountains of Greece. It shall satisfy the most demanding climbers. Galatas village

Galatas is a lowland village, belongs to the Municipality of the City of Nafpaktos of Aetoloakarnania county. It is the largest local community of the Municipality of Nafpaktos. After the 2001 census were 1,224 inhabitants. The village consists of agglomerations New Galata (Settlement), Kato Galatas, Petralona Paliostani, New village and seaside resort of Krioneri. Its natural boundaries are north - northeast of the mountain Varasova, in western side of the Evinos river that separates the community from Evinochori community and south-southeast of the Patraic (Kalydonios) bay. The village is about one kilometer from the highway (E-55) which connects the Peloponnese through the Rion - Antirrion the western mainland Greece and Epirus. West of the village, a distance of 15 km is Messolonghi. In the center of Kato Galatas is the parish church dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin and the square is the Memorial to the fallen Galatas war soldiers. Also in Galatas there is a medical first aid infirmary, the elementary school and a kindergarten. Stone Age: The anthropologist Aris Poulianos, based on the findings of the excavations in the Cave of St. Nicholas Galata, claims that lived during this period in the Arhanthropos. II. NEOLITHIC: The existence of life in Galata these years, evidenced by the findings unearthed in the excavations of Benton Krioneri and Mycenaean tombs at the foot of Varasova. III. BRONZE AGE: From the years they flourished the Calydon, whose harbor was Krioneri. The existence of life in the Homeric references attest, the Aetolian myths, the Mycenaean tombs, findings, adorning the Archaeological Museums of Agrinio and Athens and especially the excavation work of Mr. K.Romeos. The vast majority of visitors arrive during the tourist season, which is April through October. Peak season is July through August, and most of the tourists and tourism industry are concentrated in Crete, the Dodecanese, Cyclades, and Western Greek Islands, and to a lesser extent the Peloponnese and the Halkidiki peninsula in Macedonia. MARATHON

The Kryoneri Marathon is an annual summer marathon hosted by Kryoneri and Galatas in western Greece near Messologhi and Nafpaktos. Begun in 2014, inspired by local  marathon runners. Amateur and professional runners from all over Greece compete in the Kryoneri Gatalas Marathon each year, braving the valey terrain and varying weather to take part in the race.
The event attracts 500 athletes making it one of the most widely viewed sporting event. The event now attracts an average of about 1000 registered participants each year, with 3000 spectators.The local community tries to established this event as one of the most important sporting events in the entire area.

TIMES FROM THE PAST

Kryoneri Train! The train came to our region in the years of 1880 to 10 years of tenure of Prime Minister Ch. Trikoypi. Initially associated with Missolonghi Agrinio and in 1891 was linked Krioneri. TRANSPORTATION

You can drive to Kryoneri, or use your own boat if you come by sea. There is certainly a yacht marine. If you require fuel for your boat you can easily served by Galatas, Evinohori or Messolonghi gas stations. You may also visit Kryoneri by air using a helicopter and land on the edge of the pier where a heliport is. There are also 8 daily bus schedules from Messolonghi to Kryoneri and Galatas. Kryoneri is a 20 minute drive south of the Rio-Antirio Bridge and is sign- posted as “Galatas – Kryoneri”, and is a distance of 5km from the motorway.
